Front Porch Beads donates $1,500 to Meals on Wheels for Pets to feed hungry, furry friends

By Karen Thompson Features Reporter March 10, 2021

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic Front Porch Beads, a group of women who have met since 2018 to make beaded jewelry, has donated more than $7,000 to organizations that provide food to local families.

Recently, the group decided it was time to change it up and provide funding to Meals on Wheels for Pets (MOWFP) to feed hungry cats and dogs in the area. Volunteers for the non-profit organization meet twice a month to bag food.

Front Porch Beads presented a check for $1,500 to Deborah Conner, founder of the local MOWFP, to feed animals throughout Nassau County. “Community support and donations are our lifeblood and we are grateful for every donation, large or small,” she said at the check presentation last week.

MOWFP currently serves 24 clients, feeding 18 cats and 10 dogs on the East side of the county and 17 cats and 12 dogs on the West side of the county. When Conner made the first pet food deliveries in July 2009, after learning that some Meals on Wheels recipients were sharing their food with their hungry pets, there were 120 pets to care for and volunteers drove donation bags to all corners of Nassau County.

Today, the food packages are delivered by the Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels drivers. Meals on Wheels (for people) also refers the locations of hungry pets to MOWFP. Meals on Wheels received a $1,500 check from Front Porch Beads last week as well. Since its founding by Frances Peters, Front Porch Beads has gifted thousands of dollars to local organizations including Micah’s Place, Take Stock in Children, Starting Point, Arts Alive Nassau and Council on Aging.
